Hardbound prayer book, leather cover with a cross. Written inside - Mrs. Ellen H. Reily, Houston, Texas and on opposite page - Mrs. Ellen H. Reily, Christ Church, Houston, Texas, Jany. 14th, 1848. Jefferson - Tex - April 27th, 1874. Used it constantly for 26 years. The title page has a color illustration. The book is titled - The Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments; and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church according to the use of the Protestant Episcopal in the United States of America together with the Psalter or Psalms of David. New York: D. Appleton and Co., 200 Broadway, Philadelphia: Geos. Appleton, 148 Chestnut St., MDCCCXLVII. Mrs. Ellen H. Reily was wife to Col. James Reily, charg� d'affaires of the Republic of Texas at Washington.
Description:
Historical Note: This prayer book belonged to Mrs. Ellen Hart Reily, wife of Colonel James Reily, who represented the Republic of Texas as charg� d'affaires at Washington, D.C. He was appointed minister to Russia from the United States in 1859. Colonel Reily was killed at the head of his regiment in the Army of the Confederate States during the battle of Franklin, Louisiana in 1863. Mrs. Reily was the niece of Henry Clay, a Kentucky statesman. She died at Jefferson, Texas, on April 27, 1874. This prayer book was used by her from January 14, 1848 up to the time of her death.
