Historical Note: Bronze medal awarded by the management of the World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago, Illinois, 1893 to the Texas Women's World's Exhibition Association for its literary exhibit. The medal and case were made by made by Scovill Manufacturing Company, Waterbury, Connecticut, U.S.A. The Scovill Brass Works was established in Waterbury as Abel Porter & Company in 1802. Early in its 175-year history, it produced buttons, coins, whale oil lamps, carriage trim, and daguerreotype plates. Later, the company produced a diverse mixture of mill products, consumer items and components for original equipment manufacturers. Scovill was a major supplier of brass cartridge munitions casings. After World War II, with 12,000 employees, the company manufactured a quarter of a million individual and distinct products. Possibility of additional information in the Houston Daily Post, San Antonio Daily Express and the Austin Daily Statesman of August 14th, 1896. The World's Columbian Exposition, celebrating the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's landing in America, was actually held in Chicago in 1893, a year later than had been planned. Although dedication ceremonies were held on October 21, 1892, the fairgrounds were not opened to the public until May 1, 1893. The exposition closed on October 30, 1893.
