Title:
Oral History Program recordings, transcripts, and other materials
Description:
The Texas Historical Commission's (THC) History Programs Division provides preservation assistance to county historical commissions, museums, nonprofit preservation organizations, state and federal agencies, local governments, students, educators, and the general public. Oral history program recordings, transcripts, and other materials, dating 1943-1945, 1971-2019, undated, consist of audio and video recordings, oral history transcripts, correspondence, and historical documentation. The oral histories, dating 1971-2019, focus on initiatives of the agency's Military Sites and Oral History Program to document Texas World War II veterans, prisoners of World War II internment camps in Texas, and Texans' Cold War experiences; African American experiences in Mansfield, Texas, during the Jim Crow era; Mexican American experiences in Redford, Texas, also known as El Polvo; and general themes such as Texas politics and living in small-town Texas. World War II correspondence, dating 1943-1945, from former US Marine and Texan Thomas Anders appears as supporting documentation for his oral history recording. Some projects have formal names such as "Texas in WWII" and "Mansfield Oral History Project" while others do not have project names. Oral histories and other records are arranged by subject matter. Oral histories from the El Polvo Project are in Spanish. Most of the interviews from the El Polvo Project have a transcript in Spanish and English. Some oral histories include physical transcripts, photographic prints and slides, videos, and relevant historical documentation relating to the oral history topic. Historical documentation includes correspondence, photographs, and forms related to the topic the interviewees discuss during their oral history interviews.
Description:
Not all oral histories have an electronic or physical transcript. A small portion of the interviews start mid-conversation or have part of the interview missing. Multiple interviews were sometimes recorded on the same tape. Each audiocassette is counted in the inventory for only the first interview on that tape. Captions are available for all oral history audio recordings in the Texas Digital Archive.
