Dinner plate and saucer, blue and white. Dinner plate is light blue and white, with a broad floral pattern around the rim. The center depicts a stately house with trees in the foreground. Stamped on the bottom: Ironstone IV Rd UR 226, Roselle, J. Meir & Son. The saucer is dark blue and white, with fluted edges and a floral pattern around the rim. The center depicts a fortress and a moat in a rural setting.
Description:
Historical Note: Born in Sevier County, Tennessee, John Henninger Reagan (1818-1905) came to Texas in 1839. He was an attorney, a judge, a militia officer, and a Democratic politician who served in the U.S. House of Representatives both before and after the Civil War (1858-1861, 1875-1887), and as a U.S. Senator from Texas (1887-1891). In 1861, Reagan was appointed by President Jefferson Davis to be the Confederate Postmaster-General. He also served as the Confederate Secretary of the Treasury until his capture in 1865. In later life, Reagan served as the first Railroad Commissioner of Texas (1891-1903) and founded the Texas State Historical Association in 1897.
