Title: Journals/Diaries

Description: Journals and copy books allegedly kept by French pirate and privateer Jean Laffite and other Laffite family members during the 1840s-1860s give details of their lives and the Laffite brothers' pirating activities. Newspaper clippings that were originally inside the alleged Jean Laffite journal date from 1773 to around 1857. Together, the material in this series dates from 1773 to about 1869. Notable items include the journal allegedly written by Jean Laffite during the 1840s-1850s containing an account of his life in the United States after his supposed death in the 1820s; and a second journal dating about 1869 with entries allegedly by Jean Laffite and other Laffite family members, including summaries of ship data from records and log books, lists of ships captured by Jean and Pierre Laffite, Frederic (Dominique) Youx, and Reyne Beluchai, and lists of persons employed by or associated with Jean Laffite.
