Scope and Contents

The 8th Texas Cavalry, popularly known as Terry’s Texas Rangers, was a group of Texas volunteers for the Confederate States Army assembled by Colonel Benjamin Franklin Terry in August 1861. This panorama is a group photographic portrait of the Terry’s Texas Rangers reunion in Houston, Texas on November 10, 1908.

The panorama has handwritten numbers on each individual in the group portrait that correspond with a handwritten list of names in the lower margin of the print. The majority of the individuals are identified and often have a letter suffix that notes a corresponding company. Additional abbreviations have been identified including H.B. for Hood’s Brigade; Col for colored; and JAG for Judge Advocate General. The abbreviation H.R. has not been further identified. The names were verified and corrected as much as possible with the Claiborne Muster Roll, available online at http://www.keathleywebs.com/terrysrangers/terry3.htm; and two publications by Thomas W. Cutrer, Our Trust is in the God of Battles and Terry Texas Ranger Trilogy. The list of names is included with the item-level description.
