SCOT-Indexes

Indexes and registers, 1840-1995, 25.43 cubic ft. (paper, digital)

Scope and Content
The Texas Supreme Court has final appellate jurisdiction in most civil and juvenile cases. Records are indexes and registers of the Texas Supreme Court, dating 1840-1995. The indexes provide access to both the case files and the dockets. The best access to the circuit court-era cases (about 1843 to 1892) is through the M case file card index. The 1890s case file card index provides access to no prefix case files (1893-1943) from 1893 to 1898. Additional access to the no prefix cases is through the direct index covering cases dating 1870-1941, bulk 1870-1892, giving the style of the case and original case number; and the direct and reverse index covering 1934-1938, giving the style of the case and cause or application numbers. The card index for the A, B, C, D, 94, and 95 case files is the best point of access to the case files from 1944 to 1995. Additional indexes include an index to expenses and news clippings, 1940-1941; two registers of lawyers practicing before the Supreme Court, 1882-1943 and 1935-1950 respectively, providing the name of the lawyer, town, county, and date; a topical index to the A, B, and C case files, 1959-1984, providing style of the case, case number, county filed from, legal citation from the Southwestern Reporter (if applicable), type of filing, date of decision, justice giving the opinion or a note if no opinion was given; and a direct and reverse cross index to the topical index.
