Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission
In 2009, the 81st Texas Legislature created the Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission (THGC) to ensure that resources are available to students, educators, and the general public regarding the Holocaust and other genocides (Senate Bill 482, Regular Session). Administratively attached to the Texas Historical Commission, the THGC is charged with reviewing grant applications for projects related to classroom education, workshops, recording of oral histories, and digitization of papers and artifacts; creating or borrowing traveling exhibits to be housed in museums, schools, and public libraries; compiling resources for educators; and developing or approving materials for a statewide Holocaust Remembrance Week.
The THGC consists of 18 members: five public members appointed by the governor, five public members appointed by the lieutenant governor, five public members appointed by the speaker of the house, the commissioner of education, commissioner of higher education, and executive director of the Texas Veterans Commission. The commission meets quarterly.
