Texas Optometry Board
The Texas Optometry Board (TOB) was created in 1969 by Senate Bill 781 (61st Legislature, Regular Session), to replace the State Board of Examiners in Optometry. In 1981, the TOB was given the authority to promulgate procedural rules and regulations (Senate Bill 109, 67th Legislature, Regular Session). In 1991, the Optometry Act was changed (Senate Bill 774, 72nd Legislature, Regular Session) to allow for the licensing of therapeutic optometrists, allowing optometrists to treat certain conditions of the eye, remove foreign materials from the eye, and prescribe certain medications. The mission of the Texas Optometry Board is to ensure optometry professionals are qualified, competent, and adhere to established professional standards.
