Scope and Content
The Texas Office of the First Lady encompasses the official governmental activities of the spouse of the governor and functions as a subdivision of the Office of the Governor in practice. These paper records primarily consist of invitations by mail to Texas First Lady Anita Perry, and response letters accepting or declining the invitations, 1999-2014, bulk 2011-2013. A significant portion also includes administrative documents such as event scheduling and request forms.

The records offer insight to the events and social causes that Mrs. Perry was associated with and provide a sampling of the duties and responsibilities a First Lady assumes. Records include invitations to attend events, lead travel delegations, act as guest speaker, participate in fundraising, proposals for prospective events, requests for donations to silent auctions, event scheduling forms and public service announcement scripts.. The records themselves consist of printouts of email correspondence, letters, cards, handwritten notes, faxes, informational fliers, programs, brochures, internal event scheduling forms, program of events, and remarks for Mrs. Perry to deliver at events. Some, but not all, records provide reasons as to why Mrs. Perry was unable to attend an event.

The scheduling forms typically include information such as type of event, organization, date, purpose, number attending, overview, final action, program schedule and handwritten notes. These forms are also usually accompanied by letters addressed to Minnie Salinas, Director, Office of the First Lady, who handled Mrs. Perry’s scheduling, or the original invitation. Also included in these records is correspondence to and from Michelle Sneed, Chief of Staff, Office of the First Lady.

Organizations and social causes reflected in these records include the Legislative Ladies Club, Texas Cultural Trust Fund, Scholastic, Parkland Hospital, Senate Ladies Club, Race for the Cure, Safeplace, March of Dimes, Children’s Hospital, the Anita Thigpen Perry endowment at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Health Science Center, and the Texas Historical Commission’s Main Street Program.

Records are arranged in the order as received from the agency. Overall, records are arranged chronologically by year. The arrangement style within folders however is not always consistent. In some cases, records are filed according to names of organizations and social causes. In other instances, records are filed by year. A few are organized by “accepted” or “declined.”
