Scope and Content
The Governor’s Commission for Women (GCW) was created in 1967 to serve as a liaison between Texas women and government agencies, as well as private entities addressing women’s needs. These records primarily document the activities of the commission during the terms of governors Ann Richards and George W. Bush. Dates include 1988-1990, 1993-1999. When Ann Richards was governor, the focus was on the mental, physical and emotional health of Texas Women. The emphasis of the commission during Governor Bush’s term was the support and promotion of volunteer efforts in Texas through the Office of Volunteerism.

The records include biennial reports, agreements, memoranda, agenda, plans, copies of newspaper articles, conference material for the professional development conferences held by the state agency council (SAC), travel vouchers, correspondence, fliers, survey forms and results, training materials, agency policies, speech transcripts, newsletters, electronic slide presentations, letters of recommendation, member and subscriber lists, and project proposals.

Organizations and causes reflected in these records include the State Agency Council (SAC), National Association of Commissions for Women, Grace after Fire (for women veterans), Texas Woman’s University, Texas Women’s Hall of Fame, Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Texas, Women’s Business Exchange, Girl Scouts of Central Texas, and Women’s History Month.
