Scope and Content
Major responsibilities of the Press Office (also known as Communications) under Governor Rick Perry included issuing press releases and media advisories on the activities and actions of the governor, as well as the first lady; writing speeches and public service announcements for the governor and the first lady; and creating visual and audio documentation of the governor’s and the first lady’s public events. Press Office photographs include images of press conferences, public events throughout Texas and formal individual and group portraits of Governor Perry, First Lady Anita Perry and their family, along with a significant amount of images of the Governor’s Mansion, 1972, 1998-2015, bulk 2008-2012.

Images focus on business and economic development, education, military members and veterans, natural disaster recovery and relief, legislative matters, border security and public celebrations in Texas. Many of the images are of Governor Perry traveling throughout Texas and include visits to local businesses, ground-breaking ceremonies, elementary school visits, commencement speeches and graduations, parades, memorials, book signings and political campaign stops. Events at the Capitol include visits to the governor’s reception room and office for the public and special guests, rallies in support of issues such as pro-life measures, health care and the National Day of Prayer. Annual events include the Texas Women’s Conference and the Governor’s Award. Natural disaster recovery and relief include Tropical Storms Edouard and Gustav, Hurricanes Ike, Katrina, Rita, and Dolly and the Bastrop wildfires. Legislative matters include state of the state addresses and legislative speeches, bill signings, press conferences with Texas legislators, swearing-in ceremonies, award honoree ceremonies and visits with political leaders and delegations from outside of Texas and the United States. Governor Perry was photographed during his travels overseas to China, the United Kingdom and Israel and on his visits with U.S. troops in Iraq, Pakistan, Kuwait and Afghanistan. A significant number of images feature events at the Governor’s Mansion including visits and tours and the 2008 arson damage and building renovations, along with fundraising events and public service announcements by celebrities in support of renovation efforts.

General subject photographs include headshots and formal portraits of Governor Perry and First Lady Anita Perry, as well as formal group portraits of the couple and select family photos. General subject photographs of Governor Perry show him at various unidentified public events. There are numerous images of the Governor’s Mansion before and after the June 2008 fire. Images show the fire damage to the structure, elements of the police investigation of the arson, tours of the new construction and renovations and public fundraising events. General subjects include images arranged by Press Office staff in relation to education, disabilities and homeland security. Many of the images in the subject categories are duplicate images from chronologically arranged public events. Also included are a large amount of stock photographs of Texas used by Press Office staff. Finally, there is one folder of Press Office employees, including personal events and headshots.

The majority of the photographs are in electronic format including .jpg, .tif, .psd, and .cr2 file formats. Many images are found in various versions within the same folder, such as high-resolution .cr2 files and web-size .jpg files for the same event. Not all duplicate images are available electronically. In some instances captions and accompanying textual information is found with the photographs in .doc or .txt files. Select metadata is available with the electronic images. Analog photographs include both negatives and photographic prints in color and black and white.

Press Office staff maintained Governor Perry’s Flickr page and updated this social media site with photographs from his various public events. As of July 2015, photographs from this collection are still available on Rick Perry’s Flickr page.
