Scope and Content
Major responsibilities of the Press Office under Governor Rick Perry included issuing press releases and media advisories on the activities and actions of the governor, as well as First Lady; writing speeches and public service announcements for the governor and the First Lady; and creating visual and audio documentation of Governor Perry and First Lady’s public events. Press Office video files include press conferences, interviews, speeches, bill signings, inaugurations and ceremonies, public service announcements, special video projects and clips, greetings and podcasts, 2000-2014, undated, bulk 2008-2012.
The video files include greetings from Governor Perry and First Lady Anita Perry, including holiday greetings, welcome messages to local organizations and award ceremonies, employee recognition videos and public service announcements. Many of the videos have the Office of the Governor banner along the bottom of the video screen. In some instances, only audio or only video options are available. Greetings from later years include drafts and multiple takes of the same script. Podcasts include final versions of video interviews with state agency employees and Governor Perry’s staff, along with audio renders and final video podcasts of Governor Perry at various public events. The audio files match with final versions of video podcasts which often include the title, date and location of event with the Office of the Governor seal as a part of the final video product. Press events include video of Governor Perry at public speaking events, such as press conferences with Texas area businesses, addresses in the Texas Legislature and press events surrounding bill signings, and press conferences for natural disaster situations including hurricanes, tropical storms and wildfires. Also included with videos of press events are interviews conducted with various individuals for the “In Their Words” series. Special projects include working files with audio, video and photographs, arranged by subject and used by staff to create slideshows and video projects. Subjects include the Governor’s Mansion fire and public service announcement campaigns, wildlife relief, Texas Women’s Hall of Fame, recovery from natural disasters and border security. Video clips include unedited video arranged by subject, such as disaster relief, press events at local businesses and border security, along with video clips from third-party news sources.
The majority of the records are in electronic format including .mov, .avi, .mp3, .m4v, .flv, and .wmv files. Analog video material includes VHS, Betacam and other video formats.
Many of Governor Perry’s video greetings and events are available for public viewing on the Governor Perry YouTube Channel, as of July 2015.
