Scope and Content
The Texas Music Office of the Texas Governor’s Office is a state-funded business promotion office and information clearinghouse for the Texas music industry. Records consist of the results of a survey set on the Texas music community given by the TMO to two distinct groups: musicians, and music-related business owners, dated 1998. Each group received a particular survey tailored to their occupation, which is included with each set of results, which are anonymous. Results are by individual respondent, with some answers in number code, the key to which is provided in the corresponding questionnaire. The survey questions focus on financial issues, including employees and salaries paid, assets, liabilities, revenue sources, and expenses. Other questions focus on musical genres, professional association membership, the general state of the Texas music industry, and how the state government can assist the success of Texas music. See the subseries Project files, Staff files concerning Casey Monahan for further materials on the survey.

The electronic files consist of an executive summary of the survey results, and a full transcription of the long-form respondent comments on the state of the industry as well as how state government can help. The anonymous comments are marked by professional position and geographical area. Common points of emphasis include low pay for performances, lack of commercial radio air play, noise ordinances, promotion, and music venues. The comments often use examples from personal experience and circumstances to support their arguments.

Formats of the original electronic files include word processing or plain text files (.doc) and PDFs. Digital files presented for public use will generally be PDF for text documents. Files in their original format are available on request, restrictions may apply.
