Description:
Historical Note: In 1838, the population of Galveston met the constitutional requirements of the Republic of Texas to become a county. Congress passed an act on May 15, 1838, formally establishing Galveston County. Jacob K. Beaumont was appointed associate justice until an election could be held. The election eventually took place on the first Tuesday of September 1838.
