Description:
Pieces of wood. Includes four bigger pellet-sized wood pieces among smaller pieces of debris.
Description:
Historical Note: This is a piece of the walnut coffin in which Stephen F. Austin was buried at Peach Point, Brazoria County, Texas in the year 1836. It was presented by Mr. V.O. Weed, funeral director, who exhumed his remains, brought them to Austin and buried them in the State Cemetery, October 20, 1910. Stephen Fuller Austin, founder of Anglo-American Texas, son of Moses and Maria Austin, was born at the lead mines in southwestern Virginia on November 3, 1793. In 1820, Moses Austin was preparing to travel to San Antonio to apply for a grant of land and permission to settle 300 families in Texas, and died soon after. Stephen Austin arrived in San Antonio in August 1821. Authorized by Governor Antonio Maria Martinez to carry on the colonization enterprise under his father's grant, Austin came to an understanding about certain administrative procedures and was permitted by the governor to explore the coastal plain between the San Antonio and Brazos rivers for the purpose of selecting a site for the proposed colony.
