Given to W.D. Miller at the Hermitage, 1844-45. W.D. being there at the time of his death, as the Bearer of Annexation Papers to Washington DC. To be carefully preserved. S15-6, Gen. Jackson, March 1849.

Historical Note: Lock of hair belonging to General Andrew Jackson. This was given to Washington D. Miller at Hermitage. Miller was there at the time of his death, as the bearer of annexation papers to Washington D.C. Washington Daniel Miller was born December 4, 1814, in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1837 Miller moved to Gonzales, Texas. From November 2, 1840 to February 5, 1841, he represented Gonzales County in the House of Representatives of the Fifth Congress of the Republic of Texas. He served as private secretary to Sam Houston in 1841 and 1842, and was a member of the party called out to meet the Vasquez Expedition in 1842. Following that campaign, Miller, in partnership with William H. Cushney, published the National Register newspaper at Washington, Texas. Miller moved to Austin in 1845, and on January 1, 1848, was named Secretary of State by Governor George T. Wood, an office he held until January 2, 1850. From 1851 to 1853, he served as Secretary of the Senate in the Fourth Texas Legislature. Some time after his service in the Fourth Legislature, he became publisher of the Texas Democrat newspaper. Miller moved to Galveston in 1861, and died there on September 19, 1866. Andrew Jackson was the seventh President of the United States. He served in this position from 1829 to 1837, after which he retired to The Hermitage, his cotton plantation near Nashville, where he died in 1845.
