New York Herald newspaper, April 15, 1865. Handwritten on an inside page: Assassination of Lincoln.
Description:
Historical Note: On the evening of April 14, 1865, while attending a special performance of the comedy, Our American Cousin, President Abraham Lincoln was shot. Accompanying him at Ford's Theater that night were his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, a 28-year-old officer named Major Henry R. Rathbone, and Rathbone's fiance, Clara Harris. After the play was in progress, John Wilkes Booth, an actor, stepped into the presidential box with a drawn derringer pistol, aimed, and fired at Lincoln. Nine hours later, at 7:22 AM on April 15th, Lincoln died. The New York Herald of Saturday, April 15, 1865, carried a good account of the assassination of President Lincoln. News of the attacks on Lincoln and Secretary of State Seward reached the New York Herald by telegraph in time to make the first edition. Several other editions were issued during the day, reporting later developments, Lincoln's death, and the inauguration of Vice President Andrew Johnson as President. The several original editions, six columns wide and printed on rag paper, can be distinguished by variations in the arrangement of textual material and captions, especially on page one.
