Title:
Nails
Description:
Nails, three sets. Note for first set: 16 February 1967. Three square nails dug up from about three feet down at 305 W. Poplar St., San Antonio, where an old (age unknown) house had been removed. Note for second set: ? 1968. Prior to HemisFair (which opened April 1968), an old house in the 100 block of Lavaca St., near the fairgrounds, was remodeled. These nails were removed from some of the two-inch boards removed at that time, from various parts of the house. Note for third set: ? 1964. Nails from the old Catholic Chancery building, at the end of Stumberg St., where it dead-ended at Dwyer St., San Antonio. Building torn down some time in 1964. Reported to have been built shortly after the Civil War.
Description:
Historical Note: HemisFair '68, held in San Antonio from April 6 through October 6, 1968, was the first officially designated international exposition in the Southwestern United States. The fair commemorated the 250th anniversary of the founding of San Antonio. HemisFair opened in the spring of 1968 with an announced start-up cost of $156 million and was financially troubled from the beginning. Attendance never matched expectations, and the fair lost money, a reported $7.5 million. However the fair did attract more than 6.3 million visitors, and focused international attention on the city and state.
