Description:
Binoculars with two barrel chambers, housed in a black, leather-bound case with adjustable strap. Exterior of binoculars is possibly black lacquered cardboard. Housing covers are possibly made of galvanized steel. Printed on the nose piece: U.S. Army. 12 Glasses. Printed around the eyepieces: Dubois Fabt. Paris. Engraved underneath the sun shields on the larger portion of the lens: U.S. Navy. 11757 (possibly the registration or serial number).
Description:
Historical Note: This pair of binoculars was donated by Mrs. Charlcie Bewley Skeen in memory of her father, Rebel Lee, and mother Addie Kell Bewley. The binoculars belonged to James F. Dowdell who used them through World War I. They were returned along with a letter signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was the Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Navy at the time.
