The Texas Department of Corrections and its predecessors recorded information on individual convicts in these 23 ledgers, dated 1849-1869, 1884-1885, and 1897-1970. Information in most of the ledgers includes the convict number, name, county, new arrival, and how released. Though these sets are somewhat related, the ledgers provide different types of information.
Description:
Statistical blotters is the largest set of ledgers (15 volumes) with the greatest date coverage, that is, 1897-1900, 1904-1907, 1931-1935, 1942-1943, 1950-1951, and 1957-1970. Information given is the convict number, name, religion, county, term, age, race, whether married, tobacco, habits, education, sex, occupation, and nativity. Lists of most of the terms used within this section, such as occupation or education, are listed in Categories of information found in the convict record ledgers and statistical record ledgers section of this finding aid (e.g., bakers or laborers as types of occupations). The information is ordered into the following categories and arranged chronologically by month: New received; Discharged; Delivered to sheriff; Returned to sheriff; Escaped; Pardoned; and Died. The later ledgers contain the following additional categories: Conditional pardons returned; Bench warrants; Conditional pardons; Reprieves; General paroles returned; Reprieves voluntarily returned; Returned reprieve violators; and Returned from b/w (bench warrant).
