Samuel Hardin Gates moved to Texas as a member of Stephen F. Austin's first colony and later served in the Texas Revolution, for which he was awarded a land grant in Gonzales County, Texas, where he worked as a gunsmith and rancher. Among his records and correspondence, 1836-1870, are personal promises to pay received from and sent to individuals for various services, receipts and invoices for goods purchased, daybooks documenting his daily and financial activities before his service in the Civil War, a record of his membership at a Methodist church, Civil War military records and personal correspondence, and land deeds and bonds both received by and awarded by Samuel Hardin Gates. Personal correspondence includes letters gathered by Samuel Hardin Gates written by his sons, Joseph Dillard Gates and Samuel Amos Gates, relating their experiences serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Military records and correspondence document his appointment, orders, and eventual dismissal from a Civil War committee in Gonzales, Texas.
