Title:
Joseph Dillard Gates records and correspondence
Description:
Joseph Dillard Gates, a son of Samuel Hardin Gates, was a rancher in Gonzales, Texas, who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and later held local political office in Gonzales. His records and correspondence, 1865-1921, undated, consist largely of financial, military, and political records and correspondence, along with personal correspondence and papers. The financial records primarily consist of Joseph Dillard's tax receipts from 1867 to 1921, bank slips and account statements from Gonzales State Bank and Trust Co., checks sent and received by Joseph Dillard Gates, newspaper subscriptions, receipts to local newspapers, invoices and account ledgers for horse and cattle transactions that serve to document his activities and status as a land-owning rancher and farmer in Gonzales. The military records include a roster of Company C, Willis Cavalry Battalion of Waul's Texas Legion, on which Gates and his brother Samuel Amos Gates are listed; correspondence sent and received by Joseph Dillard Gates during the Civil War while applying for furlough; documentation of his promotion to and orders as first lieutenant in the Texas reserve militia; his application for a pension from the United States government; and a short memoir detailing his perspectives on the Civil War. Joseph Dillard Gates's political career is documented through voter ballots and Democratic Party campaign tickets on which he appeared, and county records and correspondence created as part of his duties as animal and hide inspector and commissioner, precinct four, for Gonzales County. Personal correspondence received from family members and friends further highlights Joseph Dillard Gates's personal relationships.
