Title:
General family records, correspondence, and other materials
Description:
The Gates family was among the first families to settle in Texas as a part of Stephen F. Austin's first Texas colony with family members later taking part in the Texas Revolution and Civil War, accumulating a large amount of land, and becoming active participants in Texas politics. General family records and correspondence, 1818-1924, undated, comprise correspondence, estate and property records relating to the Gates family estate and other lands, financial records, and political documents and ephemera. Financial ledgers of Daniel Alexander Gates are included. Correspondence encompasses letters written between Gates family members not appearing in other series. Within estate and property records are various land surveys conducted by James Bird. There are also property records in the form of deeds, land grants, bonds, and other purchase documents for land relating to James Bird, Wiley Duren, and extended members of the Gates family, including Joseph Dillard, Samuel Hardin Gates's father-in-law. Financial records contain promises to pay, tax records, and ledgers for financial transactions, two of which document the sale of two enslaved individuals, one of whom was a 30-year-old named Elisha, purchased in 1836 by Wiley Duren.
